Design Challenge
02/17/20
After class last week. I did what was suggested for my research. I decided to look into myself and define what I really VR/AR really means to me and what makes people have the “Ideal” moment in games, movies, entertainment or in any external thing.
I tend to think of the Japanese culture, how their culture really defined what craftsmanship really means. To be really good at something and to master it. I feel like VR/AR is in that realm of craftsmanship and hasn’t got to the “ah ha” moment of mastery level.
I couldn’t help but think of the Wright Bros. and their story of how they created the first piloted plane. I am fascinated with aviation and the history of the Wright Bros. The story of their work was interesting because they were just two guys with a lot of time. They were designing a plane during a time all the experts and wealthy men were trying to fly as well. They ended up beating everyone else and weren’t even experts, they were just determined and curious.
My design challenge for this month will be centered around the theme of understanding emotions in VR/AR. What makes someone happy in VR/AR. For the workshop for next week I want survey the cohorts and ask what they think is being “happy” while playing a video game, being in VR/AR or watching a movie. Something related to an immersive world. I really like the aspect of world building and how that can be therapeutic in certain ways.
Another challenge is to think of a VR/AR application that is related to building, expanding, growing, stretching, etc.
Idea 1.) Experiencing what it’s like to generate sound and manipulate it. Something similar to this:

Idea 2.) Building your future selves. Creating alternate versions of you and career paths to take in your current position.
Idea 3.) Conflict resolution strategies. Build a team and help in team dynamics in order to achieve a goal.
